CCIF-Asia
The CCIF-Asia program pursues concrete and measurable milestones
in the creation of permanent conservation concessions and technical
support in order to preserve valuable marine resources throughout
the Indo-Pacific area. With an office in Bali, Indonesia, our staff
is able to collaborate with international and local conservation
organizations that are most knowledgeable about regional biodiversity
and conservation issues and have the greatest insight into its legal,
cultural, and political environment.
CCIF-Asia initiatives include:
Initiating support for conservation concessions in Indonesia.
CCIF is investigating possible mechanisms and legal frameworks for
conservation concessions in Indonesia. Conservation concessions
are a mechanism used to establish direct economic incentives for
conservation. Direct payments from conservation groups, governments,
development organizations, or corporations are paid to entities
controlling natural ecosystems in exchange for the conservation
services that they provide. The efficient price for these
services is equivalent to the social opportunity cost of not destroying
the natural resources embodied in the conserved ecosystems. To date,
CCIF-Asia has conducted joint feasibility studies and is in discussions
with local and international partners to design conservation concession
solutions in both the Wakatobi region and the Togean Islands in
Suluwesi and Raja Ampat Islands in West Papua.
Providing technical assistance for sustainable fisheries in Indonesia.
CCIF provides technical assistance for international and local NGOs
in designing and evaluating conservation solutions. Examples are
illustrated from the following locations:
West Bali. In collaboration with the
World Wide Fund for Nature, CCIF is developing solutions to market
and trade obstacles to sustainably harvest ornamental fish by
local fishers.
Wakatobi National Park, Sulawesi. In conjunction with a conservation
concession feasibility assessment for Wakatobi National Park,
CCIF is developing solutions to transform destructive fishing practices for the park.
Kapoposang Tourism Reserve, Spermonde Archipelago, Sulawesi.
CCIF is supporting the local NGO, Kapoposang Care Consortium,
in assessing sustainable business opportunities to provide financial
support for the Kapoposang Tourism Reserve.
Karimunjawa National Park, North Java. CCIF is supporting the local NGO,
Taka, in assessing sustainable business opportunities to provide financial
support for the Karimunjawa National Park. Strong opportunities include
pursuing a conservation concession for the privately owned islands within
the national park.
Providing technical advice to investors seeking
conservation returns in Indonesia, as well as conservation organizations
seeking investments.
Local communities and organizations in Indonesia and elsewhere have a
compelling interest to generate economic growth while at the same time
preserving and conserving their natural resources. Given this understanding,
they often lack the resources and knowledge to assess opportunities and
design solutions for sustainable enterprise development within their
communities. CCIF provides overall technical and financial assistance in
evaluating and designing programs and assists in funding these programs.
